The single most important thing a seat cushion does is to conform to the shape of your body to spread the load. Our inflatable seat cushion achieves this objective by precisely adapting itself to your individual shape.
You will float on a cushion of air, stored in interconnected cells. You use a small pump to charge the tightly sealed cells, formed in non-hardening neoprene, with just the right amount of air pressure, then you close the cushion's valve to hold that basic shape. This will allow the air in the cells to shift away from the areas of your body that put the greatest amount of downward pressure on the cells below them, evening out the pressure.
You end up sitting on a very shallow cushion of air that conforms perfectly to your shape, thus spreading the weight out well beyond the areas where it normally concentrates. By spreading the support over a much larger area, the inflatable seat cushion allows blood to flow much more freely, improving muscle function, circulation, combating pain and fatigue. The inflatable seat cushion uses a system of soft, flexible air cells interconnected by small channels that allows air to flow from one cell to another at a controlled rate. Our technology has proven effective for healing and prevention of ischemic ulcers and the positioning and stability needed by wheelchair users, and added comfort for extended sitting times. We chose to use air as the fluid instead of water because of the weight and potential problems water could cause. Water is affected by gravity, difficult to adjust, hard to regulate by temperature, and requires lengthy set-up and take down times. Foams and gels don't posses all of the same properties as air and thus are inadequate at providing appropriate pressure distribution without tissue deformation. Foams compress with time, becoming virtually useless, and gels tend to be heavy, coagulate with time, and become softer when hot and harder when cold, due to changes in density from temperature exposure.
Our inflatable seat cushions are constructed of individual cells that move independently. Each cell twists, turns, bends and adapts precisely to the contours and anatomy of your body for six degrees of freedom. The unique cellular design allows for low surface tension for immersion into the cushion without deforming tissue. There are constant restoring forces as pressures pushing back are kept equal at all points. As the body is immersed, greater contact area is achieved for dispersion of pressure and the pressure on any one area is minimized.
As a result of the unique properties used by the inflatable seat cushion, there is a low friction and low shear environment. Friction acts to oppose the direction of motion, or impending motion. Shearing occurs when opposite, but parallel, forces meet and the outcome inhibits blood flow. The slick surface of the cells combined with independent motion of each cell greatly reduces friction and shear as you move allowing your back muscles to more readily adapt and stabilize.
